In today’s professional world, networking has gone beyond swapping business cards at conferences—it’s about forming real, meaningful connections that can actually shape your career. During our recent podcast, I spoke with Colin Rocker, aka CareerColin, about his journey as a first-gen professional and how networking became his “100% secret sauce” to success. Spoiler: it’s all about blending soft skills and leveraging AI, while staying true to yourself.
WHY SOFT SKILLS MATTER MORE THAN EVER
With AI shaking up industries left and right, it’s tempting to focus on all the tech stuff. But Colin pointed out something crucial: soft skills are becoming the new hard skills. “The soft skills are the hard skills,” he said, and I couldn’t agree more. With AI now tackling everything from app-building to data analysis, the human touch is more valuable than ever.
Colin shared a personal experience of building an app with the help of AI tools. “I haven’t had to ask anyone for technical help, I’m just doing it slowly on my own. But AI can’t replace the interpersonal skills that really make a difference in your career.” And he’s right—while AI may handle the technical heavy lifting, it’s those soft skills that help you navigate the workforce and build lasting connections.
AUTHENTICITY IN NETWORKING IS EVERYTHING
Let’s be honest: networking can feel awkward, especially if you’re just starting out or introverted. Colin admitted that even seasoned professionals struggle with starting conversations, but his advice? Keep it simple and authentic. “It’s tough to go out and have a conversation with someone you don’t know. But put yourself in places where people are more likely to want to talk.”
He suggested finding environments where your interests align with others. Love fitness? Go to a class where people are just as passionate about it. Into fashion? Hit up a pop-up runway event. Networking doesn’t have to feel forced if you’re in a place where you naturally fit in. Colin added, “If you’re genuine, people can feel that, and it helps break the ice.”
KICK OFF EVERY CONVERSATION WITH A COMPLIMENT
One of my favorite tips from Colin was about breaking the ice in a new conversation. He said, “Start every conversation with a compliment—it doesn’t have to be a big one.” It’s such a simple, effective way to set a positive tone and ease into a more meaningful dialogue.
But here’s the real game-changer: the follow-up. According to Colin, “You’ve got to be quick to follow up, or you’ll be quickly forgotten.” He shared how he’s built relationships by sending LinkedIn messages or quick texts right after events. It’s these little touches that keep your connections warm and growing over time.
GRACE, PATIENCE, AND PERSISTENCE IN NETWORKING
Finally, Colin left us with some wisdom about the long game. Networking isn’t something you master overnight. “Give yourself the grace to learn and grow,” he said, and I think that’s something we all need to remember. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about showing up, starting conversations, and consistently following up.
As a first-gen professional, Colin emphasized how challenging it can be to navigate these spaces, but persistence pays off. He spoke about his own journey, starting from a non-traditional path and building his career through constant networking, learning, and putting himself out there.
In a world that’s rapidly evolving, especially with AI, one thing is clear: the human connection is irreplaceable. So whether it’s through soft skills, authenticity, or persistence, networking can be the key that opens doors you didn’t even know were there.
