Embracing Change and Driving Growth: Career Lessons from Ann Madea

By Justin Priest, Chief Operating Officer  | Insight | Comments are Closed | 19 February, 2025 | 0

While some careers follow a carefully mapped path, Ann Madea’s journey, as shared on Tech on Tap, offers a compelling example of adaptability, bold choices, and the lasting impact of meaningful relationships.

Ann began as a biochemistry major, never expecting a future in technology. Her shift wasn’t part of a grand strategy; it started with a simple suggestion from her father to take a programming class. That one decision transformed her career. Her story is a powerful reminder that small moments such as a single class, a key conversation, or a mentor’s advice can redefine a career. The real lesson is to stay open to these opportunities and act on them when they arise.

    RELATIONSHIPS FUEL CAREER SUCCESS

One of the strongest themes in Ann’s journey is the value of relationships. While technical expertise is essential, being recognized and remembered for your contributions can be just as important. Ann made it a priority to build a broad and trusted network within and outside her organization. When new opportunities emerged, she was already a familiar and respected name.

A great example of this was her effort to connect with her company’s CIO, Ken Harvey. By engaging with leadership events, tracking his career, and initiating conversations, she developed a strong professional relationship over time. Her approach shows that visibility and networking are not optional; they are fundamental to career advancement.

    GROWTH COMES THROUGH CHALLENGES

Ann frequently found herself in high-pressure roles leading stalled projects, managing complex transitions, and guiding struggling teams. Rather than avoid these situations, she welcomed them.

She earned a reputation as someone who could solve difficult problems and deliver results under pressure. That reputation was the result of her willingness to step into uncertainty and prove her ability to lead through complexity.

This mindset reveals a key truth. Growth rarely comes from staying comfortable. It comes from taking on the challenges others avoid and showing that you can navigate tough situations.

LISTENING IS THE HEART OF LEADERSHIP

One of Ann’s most impactful leadership moments occurred in Brazil, where she inherited a team that had been demoralized by a toxic manager. Instead of arriving with immediate solutions, she chose to listen. She asked thoughtful questions, welcomed feedback, and built trust by showing that she genuinely cared.

By the end of her visit, a team member said, “We can work with you. We trust you.” That moment marked a turning point in team morale. It underscores an essential leadership principle: trust must be earned, and the foundation of trust is active listening.

KEEP LEARNING AND ADVOCATE FOR YOUR PATH

Ann’s career demonstrates a lifelong commitment to growth. She pursued additional learning through courses at MIT, collaborated with startups, and refreshed her coding skills to remain sharp. Even after reaching executive roles, she continued evolving.

She was also proactive about her career goals. Rather than wait for recognition, she clearly communicated her ambitions, pursued the experiences needed to back them up, and strategically positioned herself for leadership roles. From international assignments to cross-industry challenges, she took deliberate steps to prepare for the executive level.

This reflects a valuable insight. Advancement is not just about doing great work. It also requires making sure the right people understand where you want to go and why you’re ready for that next step.

    KEY LESSONS FROM ANN’S JOURNEY
    • Relationships create opportunities. Build a strong network and make your work visible.
    • Growth comes from embracing challenges. The tough projects are often the most rewarding.
    • Leadership begins with listening. Trust is built through understanding, not authority.
    • Career growth requires intention. Pursue the skills and experiences that prepare you for success.

Ann Madea’s story proves that career success is not about luck. It comes from being strategic, building connections, and consistently pushing yourself forward. If you’re considering your next career move, ask yourself: What challenge am I ready to take on next?
